Week 10 Recap

As we welcomed crowds back into all Outer East venues over the weekend, we had some great games across the board with close results and a real sense of community sprit seen by all clubs which embodies what community sport is all about. Here’s the round recap:

FOOTBALL

Totally Work Wear Berwick & Knoxfield Premier Division Seniors 

Beaconsfield have continued their great run of form in premier division, proving too good for Upwey Tecoma with a 56-point victory. Jafar Ocaa kicked three goals while Nick Battle put in another outstanding performance with 37 possessions, 17 of which were contested, 11 clearances and nine tackles. Brandon White also had a great day with 34 disposals.

In what was a great day at Kalora Park with three of the four matches decided by single digits, Cranbourne beat Narre Warren in a cracking match by two points in the seniors to stamp themselves as genuine premiership contenders. Down by 17 points at three quarter time, the Magpies fought back with three goals to none in the final quarter to keep themselves in the contest but were unable to snatch the win away from Cranbourne. Jake Cowburn kicked two goals for the Eagles while Trent Cody and Jake Richardson shared four goals between them for the Magpies.

Woori Yallock have stormed back into finals contention with a stiring come from behind win against Pakenham. Early in the third term, it looked again as though the wide expanses of Toomuc Reserve were going to be too much for a visiting team. The Tigers, however, led by ruckman Zac Monkhorst and Josh Neal with three goals managed to get the game back on their terms and come away with a 22-point victory.

Playing on a neutral venue at Woori Yallock Recreation Reserve, the boys from Olinda Ferny Creek continued to make their club proud during a tough period with a 109-point victory over Wandin, who failed to play to the best of their ability. Hunter Greenall and Lachlan Taylor starred up forward with five goals for the Bloods while captain Kelsey Currie put in another inspirational performance with 32 possessions and seven tackles.

Hallam & Baywater Truck Centres Division One Seniors

Celebrating the grand opening and first day of competitive football and netball at their new facility at Mick Morland Reserve, Berwick Springs grabbed their second win of the season, ironically against Belgrave again by 32 points. Dysan Morris kicked two goals for the Titans while Jarrod Hocking, Dean Waterstone, Aidan Nelson, Blake Simondson and Brodie Worland all featured as the best players.

With the scores level at half time, Mount Evelyn stepped up in the second half of their game against Emerald to show what they were made of, recording a 22-point victory in their first away match of the season, but proved to be inaccurate in front of goal. The winners finished with 8.13-61 with their overall leading goal kicker, Michael Gibbons, registering just four behinds. Midfield warrior Daimon Kift recorded 30 possessions to help his side maintain top spot on the ladder.

Another great game over the weekend came from Gembrook Cockatoo’s temporary home ground at Heatherbrae Reserve with a narrow three-point victory over Seville. The Brookers defeat of the Blues means they have squared up with them after they lost to the visitors in round one. Seville are now left scratching their heads, with the loss being the second successive one against a top four side.

Officer have made it two ground-breaking wins in a row against tough opposition, inflicting Monbulk’s first loss for season 2021. The win against the former ladder leaders means the Kangaroos have made a statement of intent to the competition where the boys from Stirling Road are genuine premiership contenders in 2021.

ATC Traffic Division Two Seniors

Despite a low-scoring game, Kinglake grabbed the win against Yarra Glen to maintain their spot as a top two side in the competition. Damian Pywell and Bailey Hamer kicked two goals each for the Lakers while Callum Morison was solid for the River Pigs, booting three goals at the other end of the ground.

Warburton Millgrove were providing ladder leaders Alexandra with a reality check in their match at Mac Sparke Oval, before taking their foot off the pedal and going scoreless in the final quarter, allowing the Rebels to overcome a five-point deficit at three-quarter time to win by 20-points. Centre half backman Josef Builder was solid in defence with nine marks while Liam Barnard once again was a warrior for the Burras with 22 possessions.

David Johnson had a big day out in Yarra Junction’s 153-point victory over Broadford, booting 10 goals to put himself into second spot in the division two goal kicking leaderboard. Eagles captain Allan Chandler led from the front with 27 possessions and two goals to put his side back on the radar as a finals contender. Broadford player and former Yarra Junction premiership player Jayden Welch’s last game of football was recognised with a guard of honour from the two sides and being chaired off at the conclusion of the game.

The final game of division two produced another big bag of goals, with Michael Fowkes exciting Powelltown supporters with 10 majors in the Demons defeat against Yea. Russell Cowan was one of the leading possession getters with 25 disposals, while also sharing seven goals between himself and Josh Taylor.

Women’s Division One

Beaconsfield came away with the win over Upwey Tecoma to maintain their status as one of the teams to beat in Division One, with an eight-point victory at Holm Park. Katie Angelis and Courtney Robinson were the goal kickers for the Eagles while Tigers captain Kiana Oates did her best to keep her side honest throughout the game.

Pakenam took a big scalp over the weekend, with a 52-point victory over bottom placed Monbulk at Toomuc Reserve. Amy Campbell, Belinda McGee and Lucy Ventham all shared two goals each while Emily Devine, Annalise Ryan, Abey Tognazzi and Rachel Betteridge all starred as the best players for the Lions.

Undefeated ladder leaders Mount Evelyn didn’t have it easy in their game against Healesville, with the Bloods doing their best to keep them honest in their match at Don Road Sports Complex. The Rovers won by 12-points in a low scoring affair, with Kiara Simons, Isobel Urquhart and Georgia Ploegsma sharing one goal each. Danielle Currucan was the only goal kicker for the Bloods.

Women’s Division Two

Belgrave claimed the biggest upset in the competition over the weekend, stunning the dominant Yarra Junction women’s team to win by nine points. The Magpies put in a brilliant show of teamwork and commitment to claim the big win, with Sam De Bono Temopoulos, Justine De Graaf, Rachel Ferguson, Nigisti Noorbergen, Christina Missos and Amanda Fage starring as the best players in the game at Belgrave Recreation Reserve.

Officer grabbed another weekend to continue their quest to feature in finals action, beating Olinda Ferny Creek by six points. The win at Starling Road now moves the Kangaroos into second on the ladder to make a statement as one of the teams to beat in Division Two. Alison Wartnaby and Natalie Holmes were the goal kickers while Kalie Pay, Maegan Davey, Melissa Dingle and Natasha Egginton were Officer’s best.

Thornton Eildon took their third win of the season over the weekend, the second of which against Seville/Woori Yallock, with a 25-point win at Thornton Recreation Reserve. Magents jade Connolly and Tahnee Heard were the goal kickers for the Kangaroos while Hannah Rusic, Lucy Mcrae, Emily Kerr, Lisa Stanchinotti, Sophie Penney were the best players.

NETBALL

Kärcher Premier A Grade

Olinda Ferny Creek have continued their dominant run in Premier A Grade, defeating Wandin 76 to 49. Elly Stewart and Jackie Cullimore were the goal scorers while Madison Taylor and Brodie Smith were best players on court.

Woori Yallock grabbed another win as the home club against the Pakenham Lions over the weekend, winning 51 to 35. The win now pushes them up to sixth on the ladder.

Beaconsfield bounced back from a tight loss last week to defeat Upwey Tecoma 56 to 29. Elizabeth Murphy and Bianca Sanzaro were the goal shooters while Rylee Nelson and Danielle Cameron featured as the best on court.

Narre Warren claimed their fifth win of the year with a 13-point win over Cranbourne at Kalora Park. Mercy Ioelu, Chelsea Tonna and Jemma Osborne were the goal shooters for the Magpies while Brittany Mashado, Gabrielle Dwyer and Caitlin Stephens were the best players.

Berwick grabbed the win over Doveton by nine points at Robinson Reserve, with Emma Clarke and Chloe Phillips featuring as the goal shooters. The best players were Sophie Gambetta and Hayley Stewart.

Kärcher Division 1 A Grade

Seville have continued their great run in 2021 with a 24-point victory against Gembrook Cockatoo at Heatherbrae Reserve. Olivia Ray and Carly McDonnell were the goal shooters while Alexis Tucker, Cleo Minney and Samantha Karakinos were the best players.

Belgrave have taken their first win of the season, with a stunning two-point victory against Berwick Springs in their first home match at Mick Morland Reserve. Krystyna Gabell and Georgia Donnelly were the goal shooters while Rebecca Taylor also featured as a standout player.

ROC have continued their unbeaten streak, knocking off Monbulk with a 29-point win at Starling Road. Ellie Coutts, Samantha Neil and Jessica Postregna were the goal shooters while Ellie Coutts, Emily McInnes and Zoe Callanan were the best players.

Emerald claimed one of their best wins of the season over the weekend, with a one-point win over Mount Evelyn at Chandler Reserve. Delylah Loulanting, Jamieson Scott, Kara Ellis and Taylah Grasso were the best players for the Bombers.

Kärcher Division 2 A Grade

Warburton Millgrove took the win against Alexandra over the weekend, remaining undefeated in the process. Bianca Daniels, Kirralee Luiyff and Shae Gee were the goal shooters while Chelsea Barnard also starred for the Burras.

Yea have grabbed another win this season, beating Powelltown 41 to 35. Nikki Watts, Amy Taylor and Rachael Hickey were the goal shooters while Megan Leatham and Sophie Hennessey were the best players.

Broadford won their sixth match of the season over the weekend, beating Yarra Junction 47 to 28. Toni Bootland, Renee Sari and Ally Black were the goal shooters while Amanda Rothwell-Hiscock and Carina Mills were the best players on court.
