Belgrave Football Club are one of the many clubs to enter a Senior Women’s team into the Eastern Region Women’s competition for the first time in the 2019 season.
As they have not come from another league like other teams, the only form to go off for the Magpies is the Lightning Premiership, which was held in late March, where they won all three of their matches. This would have been a great boost of confidence for the team, considering most of the team had not played football before that particular day.
There have been a few key focuses during this preseason. As a brand new team, the key focuses has been the basic skills of football, learning positions, fitness and making multiple movements to get ahead and away from opponents.
They will only be fielding one side this season but will be looking to build on that in the future. They have a full squad with more and more girls turning up every week.
A player to watch out for this season is Emily Spicer. She is strong in any position and has been described by coach Greg Ison as someone who ‘has football smarts and great skills’. Her sister Amy is also someone to watch out for in season 2019.
As a new team, all opponents can seem like tough ones because there is no past experience and knowledge to draw on. Although, key personnel have said their first opponent Upwey Tecoma look like a very strong and well trained team.
They will want to get off to the best start possible this weekend, when they play the Tigers at Upwey Recreation Reserve.
